What Is Bookkeeping and Why Businesses Need It

Welcome. In this lesson we will cover what is bookkeeping and why businesses need it. It takes about 10 min.

Bookkeeping is recording every cedi or naira that comes into and goes out of a business. Every sale, every purchase, every expense. Without bookkeeping, a business owner does not know if they are making profit or losing money. Many small shops in Ghana and Nigeria close because the owner was actually losing money but did not know — they had cash in hand but owed more than they earned.

As a bookkeeper, you track income, expenses, inventory, and cash flow. You help the owner see: Which products sell best? Which months are most profitable? Am I spending too much on transport? Should I raise prices? This information is power. A shop owner who knows their numbers can grow. One who guesses is gambling.
