What Does a Pharmacy Assistant Do?

A pharmacy assistant supports the pharmacist in running the pharmacy. Tasks include: receiving and organizing drug deliveries, stocking shelves, managing inventory (what is low, what is expiring), assisting customers with basic queries (not advising on medication — that is the pharmacist's job), maintaining records of dispensed medications, and handling payments. You are the organizational backbone of the pharmacy.

In community health centers across Ghana and Nigeria, pharmacy assistants also serve as health data clerks — recording patient information, tracking medication usage patterns, and preparing reports for the district health office. This role is critical for public health planning: if the district office does not know which medicines are running low, they cannot resupply in time.
