Pivot to recession & AI-proof work
Ten hands-on trades in demand across Africa that pay well, cannot be done from a keyboard, and keep hiring when the economy slows. Shown for Ghana and the wider region.
Pay is written as typical local market ranges in US dollars because currencies differ across the region — treat them as guidance, not a promise. Miva does not train or certify you for these trades; each certificate is issued by the national or industry body named on its card.

Why these jobs stay open
These are not jobs nobody wants. They are jobs employers cannot fill. Understanding why the vacancy stays open tells you how much leverage you have once you qualify.
The queue to qualify is long
Almost every one of these trades puts a licence, a coded test or a certified-hours requirement between a willing person and a first shift. Supply cannot respond quickly to a hiring spike, so the vacancy stays open.
The people leaving outnumber the people arriving
A large share of the current workforce is close to retirement, while training intakes are capped by placements, test centres and instructor availability rather than by demand.
Automation moves the work, it does not remove it
Software inspects, predicts and assists. The repair still happens in a shaft, on a tower, in a pit, on a roof or beside a patient — under a signature that a certified person has to give.
Geography locks people out
Licences are regional, sites are rural and the training is urban. Qualified people and open jobs are often in different places, and neither side can move easily.
How long each opening stays unfilled
Indicative ranges compiled from published labour-market reporting and industry workforce studies. They describe typical market conditions, not a promise from any single employer.
What Meta, Google, Amazon and Microsoft run in Africa
These are the closest published equivalents from the same four companies. Most African programmes are cloud, AI and digital skills rather than data centre trades — each card says so plainly. Miva does not run them and cannot decide who is accepted.
